In the beautiful 17th-century Huis Vasari on the Herengracht in Amsterdam, designer and artist Mart Visser presented a solo exhibition showcasing his most recent paintings and sculptures. THE RESET, featuring around 65 artworks, captures precisely where Visser stands today as an artist, returning to the raw process of exploration and expression, while remaining true to his enduring subject: the human head and its many expressions.
The foundation of Visser’s visual art lies in personal empathy and the search for connections with other forms of art that he admires or finds intriguing. His work is also a quest for human form, inner integrity, and authenticity. Each piece is a reflection of human encounters. For Mart, his art is an ode to creation. The artist creates paintings and sculptures using heavy, raw materials such as weathered wood, stone, and iron, with a particular love for aged and natural textures. He stacks and shapes these materials with sensitivity to weight, forming fascinating, tactile objects. The artworks are then composed with a musical rhythm, arranged into installations that echo harmony and balance.
The monumental canal house on the Herengracht has a rich history and authentic character. Thoroughly renovated in 2021 and renamed Huis Vasari, it now serves as the home of the Vrije Academie, the Netherlands’ largest national institute for art and culture education.
