About Mart Visser Artwork

Mart Visser (1968) studied at the Montaigne Academy of Fashion and the Saga International Design Centre in Copenhagen. In addition to his work in Haute Couture and Ready-to-Wear, he has been devoted for more than ten years to creating powerful heads and portraits.

Through both painting and sculpture, he gives faces an intense, individual expression. He draws inspiration from the people he meets and allows his creativity complete freedom, without knowing in advance where pen or brush will lead him. Visser is inspired by his encounters and lets his intuition guide his free spirit. He starts with a blank canvas, unaware of what it will become. Structure, relief, craftsmanship, and technique enhance the design. Mart Visser applies the same ingredients in his artwork, sculptures, paintings, and installations. The rough and abstract approach he creates stands in stark contrast to the modernist and refined lines of his haute couture. The color palette and dynamic diversity of materials are the only overlaps with his collections: night blue, gradients in black/white/grey, dark orange, ochre, and a range of muted tones.

His career as a couturier revolves around dressing the individual, with personal attention and precision at its core. He transforms a client’s idea into a three-dimensional creation, where structure, texture, and technique come together into a whole that is recognizably Mart Visser.

His art follows a similar path: each work is a personal translation of the encounters he experiences. Each portrait, each sculpture gains a unique texture and arises from a combination of different techniques.

The contrast between the refined design of his haute couture and the raw power of his artwork is palpable. Yet the common thread remains: a sharp eye for the individual and the ability to represent their essence in three dimensions. Color, material, and dynamics are his signature in both disciplines, a hallmark of an artist who seeks to capture humanity in all its facets.
